Item Description...
Product Description Some dreams take a while before they come true. Best friends Hope and Laurie never made it to Hawaii during their college years. But when they're about to turn forty, the islands still beckon, and off they go - with an unexpected stowaway on board (Hope happens to be seven months pregnant). A little pineapple, a little sunshine, and a surprising little surfing lesson give these two sisterchicks all their crazy hearts could hope for - and more - as they enter the next season of their lives with a splash and with a beautiful vision of what God has dreamed up for them.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | I liked the first one better Sep 8, 2008 |
This was my second Sisterchicks book, and after finishing it I can definitely say the first one is alot better. I really cannot pin point why I was not as intrigued with this story as I was the first one. Maybe as one reviewer said, it was just too perfect. I think it started slow, but it did pick up toward the middle. What I found to be the most interesting was all the information on Hawaiian history and words. Perhaps, I was looking for something that would take me in my mind to the islands, and I personally did not feel that. I saw that one reviewer actually listened on CD to this book, and maybe that would have helped my imagination. All in all, I cannot say that I dont totally recommend this book, but I do think the first one was much better. I am currently reading the third in the series and cannot wait to review it because it has a great start so far. | | | | Sisterchicks Do the Hula is SWEET Oct 31, 2007 |
| There's nothing wrong with these two chicks going off on their own to Hawaii! I had the CD version, and the ocean waves, silly twanging uke and etc. made it so enjoyable. There is nothing like listening to these books. The inflection in the reader's voice made it more special. There was lots that went wrong for Hope, including her almost 40 pregnancy, the fake tan, not to mention the initial cab mistake and the spilling of the coconut oil in the gift shop. This was no perfect vacation, but the sweet attitude of the character made it seem so. And the stuff they learned about Hawaiian words and history, and the utter joy that Hope experienced in the beauty of the island...Oh, this is not my normal style of story, but I was very taken away. If you love the beach and dream of it, this book takes you there. Listen to it, if possible!! :O) | | | | Doing the hula with Jesus Oct 30, 2007 |
Woman-positive book with wonderful Christian overtones. That being said, you don't have to be Christian to appreciate this novel. Gunn weaves her messages around the psalms. And she uses the very modern, Eugene Peterson translation.
This book is woman-positive because its two main characters are women we can actually relate to. There's no ab-fab here. Hope is a middle-class, married mother of three who owns a small tea house. Laurie only recently became wealthy from the sales of her now-famous husband's art. Laurie and Hope were best friends in college. After Hope's relationship went sour, the girls decided to travel to Hawaii. Plans did not work out, as Laurie met the widowed father who becomes her husband.
Although Hope is happily married, she still misses her friendship with Laurie. Gunn quickly explains how the pair reunites. Finally, to celebrate their 40th birthday, Hope and Laurie decide to take that Hawaiian vacation. But they won't go alone- Hope is also carrying her fourth child, Emilee Rose.
The Hawaiian vacation is the main portion of this story. We follow Hope and Laurie's adventures. All of the adventures are very innocent, which put a smile on my face. There's nothing more heartwarming than reading about two women who enjoy marriage and motherhood. The big challenges? Hope must face giving birth to her fourth child at 40. Hope also has to face her own vanity as she strolls around the island looking very pregnant. Hope includes Emilee Rose, in utero, in her adventures. She floats with Emilee Rose, she eats food that Emilee Rose would enjoy, etc.
And what is Laurie's challenge? She wants to be a photographer, but she's not sure of her talent.
Overall, a sweet story about two friends who support each other through life's changes. A very positive approach to two women facing middle-age. Conservative values run rampant, which pleased my conservative self. :) We do learn about ancient Hawaiian practices, but Gunn always puts GOD first. Even the elders of the Hawaiian community love GOD. They sing in their ancient language, but they are singing the pslams. Hope and Laurie find GOD in nature, too.
Very good book for conservative women who are looking for a way to honor friendships, motherhood, marriage, and the middle years. | | | | Awesome read! Jun 5, 2007 |
Robin Jones Gunn is such a talented writer! She takes you to places you've dreamed of going and after reading you feel like you have been there. Every chacter experiences feelings that almost every woman can relate to. The Sisterchicks are loving stories about special friendships. She is my favorite christian fiction writer. I hope she continues writing. I love the setting of this one...being a beach lover. Try her Glenbrooke Series. I just finished book 7 of the 8. I almost hate to finish the last one....I want there to be a number 9 and continue on. The Glenbrooke series has romance and friendships that intertwine in each book. Gardinias for Breakfast is awesome too. | | | | Sisterchicks Do the Hula Mar 25, 2007 |
| In 1960 I lived in Hawaii and so this brought me right back to that time and of course I will only reflect on the beauty of the Islands and the wonderful people that have lived there all their life. Great read! | | | Write your own review about Sisterchicks Do the Hula (Sisterchicks Series #2)
